Prof A K Azad receives IDF Global Award
Prof A K Azad Khan, president of Diabetic Association of Bangladesh, has received the "IDF (International Diabetes Federation) Global Award" for his outstanding contribution to the health care service for diabetic patients.
Prof Azad is the only Bangladeshi who has been given such a prestigious global award, said a press release on Friday.
IDF President Sir Michael Hirst handed over the award to Prof Azad at a programme recently at Vancouver in Canada.
Representatives of 200 diabetic associations from 160 countries, specialist doctors and researchers attended the programme.
The 'Lancet,' a world renowned medical journal, honoured him last year through publication of his profile. Prof Azad Khan has written a good number of books on different diseases. Besides, more than 125 original research based publications have earned him fame at home and abroad.
He has contributed a lot to establishing the BIRDEM Academy, Ibrahim Medical College, Bangladesh University of Health Science, BIRDEM Nursing College etc.
Prof A K Azad has invented '5 ASA based drugs' used for treatment of diseases related to gastro-enterology. He is also the pioneer of 'Endoscopic' service in Bangladesh.
