National Professor Dr Mohammad Ibrahim established Diabetic Association of Bangladesh in the year 1956. Not limiting the diagnostic and treatment activities of diabetic patients, the Diabetic Association of Bangladesh has successfully expanded its activities in almost every fields of medical science as the diabetes affects all vital organs of the human body. In pursuance of this quest, Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital & Research Institute has been established by Diabetic Association of Bangladesh as a not-for profit organization to prevent, treat and rehabilitate cardiac patients, to create awareness and to develop skilled man power.

It has already established itself as a highly reputed cardiac institute in the country with a team of dedicated doctors, nurses, technicians, support service members and efficient management team. During the year this institute has been able to continue its upward trend in clinical activities as well as continual improvement of services and competency of human resources as well as introducing advance latest facilities.

Keeping the trend of continuous expansion, the bed numbers of the hospital was expanded to 161 and it is planned to make it 178.
Considering the efficiency of Ibrahim Cardiac, Diabetic Association of Bangladesh has given the responsibilities of establishing and operation of its Organ Transplant Unit. The equipment and other logistics have already been established under a project of Ministry of Social Welfare, Government of the Peoples Republic of Bangladesh.

In addition to Cardiac Services, Thoracic and Vascular surgeries, both inpatient and outpatient services for Neuro Surgery, Hepato-Biliary & Pancreatic disorders are already going on. Liver transplantation has been started under the joint collaboration with Max Super Speciality Hospital, India as per MOU signed on 11th November, 2017.

ISO 9001: 2008 QMS Certificate:

Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital & Research Institute needs to support its activities through a well-established Quality Management System to gain competitive advantage and satisfy it’s patients. To ensure this objective, the hospital has been awarded ISO 9001:2008 QMS certificate. Now Preparation has been taken to transform from 9001:2008 QMS to 9001:2015 QMS.

Academic, Training and Development activities:

Daily Clinical Meeting (Cardiology):

Daily Cardiology Clinical Meeting is being held on every working day from 8.00 a.m. to 9.00 a.m. where discussion held on the condition of admitted patients’ cases of previous day. Selected topic presentation and latest journal presentation held daily by Resident Medical Officers on rotation basis.

Post Graduate Courses (MD & MS)

A. MD (Cardiology)

a) Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital & Research institute has absorbed 3rd batch of five designated MD (Cardiology) residents for the session of March 2020 for Phase-A. These residents have completed the first block of three months out of seven blocks in Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital & Research institute and now placed in BIRDEM academy for the rest six blocks under Phase-A

b) MD (Cardiology) residents of the session March 2019 are now in different blocks in BIRDEM Academy and after completion of all blocks they will eligible to appear in Phase-A exam scheduled in January 2021 which will be conducted by BSMMU.

c) MD (Cardiology) residents of the session March 2018 are also going to re-appear in Phase-A exam in January 2021 which will be conducted by BSMMU.

d) Total of 09 residents of the three sessions had joined BCS (Health) service and after completing the required duration in the Government service, they will be able to join to continue the MD course in Cardiology.

B. MS (Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery)

MS course in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery is under process. Discussion with the relevant authority in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) has been conducted by CEO of ICHRI and Course Director (Post graduate medical courses). It is expected that the courses will be started soon.

Distance Learning Program in Cardiovascular Disease (DLP-CCVD)

This year Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital & Research Institute (lCHRI) started an online course named Certificate Course on Cardiovascular Diseases (CCVD-DLP). This course is conducted by Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital & Research Institute under the patronization of the Diabetic Association of Bangladesh. The primary aim of the project is to train General Physicians on Hypertension (HTN), Acute Coronary syndrome (ACS) and Heart Failure (HF) for early detection, initiation of treatment, follow-up and appropriate referral.

This course is designed for registered physicians who want to improve their skills on Cardiovascular Diseases focusing on HTN, ACS, HF. The course is of 4 (four) months duration. Advertisement for admission of 1st batch has been published in the daily Prothom Alo on 1st March 2020. Total 28 students were enrolled and online orientation programme was held on 29th June 2020. ECE (End Course Examination) will be taken place on Friday is" November 2020. In 2nd Batch a total of 35 students were enrolled and online orientation programme was held 27th September 2020. The course has a Course Director and Three Course Coordinators to organized and run the course. Prof. A K Azad Khan is the Chief Patron of the course.

Nursing Courses:

A. Training Course on Cardiac Nursing:

Three months long ‘Training Course on Cardiac Nursing’ has been organized for professional development of Nurses. During the year one course has been completed where 15 participants successfully passed the course. Lt. Col (Rtd) Dr Md. Hamidur Rahman, Head of Anaesthesiology is the Adviser and Mst. Zibon Nahar is the coordinator & Shahanaz Akter is the Nursing Instructor of the course.

B. Diploma in Cardiac Nursing Course:

Session 2019-2020 (8th batch)

Final examination of Diploma in Cardiac Nursing Course (Duration - 01 year) for the session of 2019-2020 (8th batch) under Bangladesh Nursing Council has been held up due to covid-19.

Session 2020-2021 (9th batch)

Diploma in Cardiac Nursing Session (2020-2021) has been started from 12 October, 2020. 20 students are admitted in this session.

C. Hands on Training “ Care for ventilated patients”

Seven days long Hands on training “Care for the ventilated patient” has been organized for professional development of Doctors and nurses. During the year one course has been completed where 05 Doctors & 13 Nurses have participated & successfully passed the courses.

D. CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) Training

One day CPR training has been organized for professional development of Doctors & Nurses. During the year, 2 courses have been completed where 12 Doctors & 30 Nurses have participated and passed the training successfully. Moreover, one special batch of 35 medical students has been completed.

E. Certificate Course in Geriatric Care:

(Session: January - December, 2019) (2nd Batch)

One year special certificate course in Geriatric Care has been introduced at Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital for prepare trained manpower in our country for taking care of aged people. The course started on 13 January, 2019 and 20 students successfully completed (passed) the course.

(Session: January - December, 2020) (3rd Batch)

The Geriatric Care course (session: Jan – Dec, 2020, 3rd batch) has been started on 09 January, 2020. 16 students are continuing the course.

Seminar/Symposium:

  • Scientific Seminar & Symposium are being held regularly.
  • Doctors and Nurses are regularly participating in CPR course arranged by BIRDEM and Ibrahim Cardiac
  • Doctors are regularly participating in DLP course arranged by BADAS.
  • Doctors are regularly attending in the medical conference/seminar at home and abroad.

Ibrahim Cardiac Day Care Centre

Ibrahim cardiac Hospital & Research Institute has inaugurated a Baby Day Care Centre on 8 August, 2019 at Organ Transplant Unit. Prof. A. K Azad Khan, President of Bangladesh Diabetic Association , has inaugurated the day care centre.

Organ Transplant Unit:

Activities of Vascular Surgery, Neuro Surgery, Kidney & Liver Transplantation have already been started. This department encompasses 27 beds including 06 in Pre V.S and 05 in Post V.S and 7 beds for N.B.S.W Hepato-Billiary-Pancreatic Surgery, Liver & Kidney transplantation.

Department of Cardiology:

The cardiology department encompasses 107 inpatients beds out of which 18 beds are allocated for Coronary Care unit (CCU), 6 beds are for SD-CCU (A), 12 in SD-CCU (B), 10 in Cath Ward, 12 in Sakina Ibrahim & Pediatric Cardiology Ward and the rest are used for the treatment of a wide range of cardiac conditions, both acute and chronic, Comprehensive and Non-Invasive services are offered.
This department offers multi-disciplinary approach to treatment of cardiac diseases/ailments. It provides a range of services taking into consideration the patient’s needs. The treatment is supported by a team of Cardiologists.
