Universal Health Coverage Plan (UHCP) Project for Garment Employee/workers
Universal Health Coverage Plan (UHCP) is the modified concept of the Health Micro insurance (HMI) project. HMI is a project of BADAS (Diabetic Association of Bangladesh) in collaboration with UICL (United Insurance Company Limited) & New Asia Group of Garment for providing comprehensive Medical Care to approximately 10,000-11,000 garment industry workers. BADAS has successfully operated the 2nd year of the Health Micro Insurance (HMI) and has provided health care support to the garments workers through National Health Care Network (NHN), one of the largest enterprises of BADAS. For the betterment of the monetary transaction without insurance, BADAS is piloting a new concept (UHCP) for garment workers in collaboration with Weave Our Future (WOF).
In this project WOF, BADAS and Garment Industries collaborate together where WOF work as a donor, BADAS work as Health Provider as well as management of the project and the Garment Industries work as the Health Coverage Receivers. BADAS and Auchan International, a French retailer, through it’s foundation “Weave Our Future” plans to operate a Health Coverage Pilot Project among Ready-Made Garment Workers in the selected factories of Narayanganj area, Bangladesh.

Nationwide Electronic Registry of Patients through BADAS
The objectives of the Nationwide Electronic Patient Record through BADAS Centres are:
1. Enroll all patients into an electronic patient record (software)
2. Establish a uniform Patient Data Form that may used in all BADAS Institutions, Enterprises and Affiliated Associations.
3. Establish a uniform Patient Identity Code.
4. Determine the Diabetes Status of the patients
5. Maintain the following patient data:
• Demographic and socio-economic status
• Medical/Clinical Data
• Medical Conditions (if any)
• Medication Behaviour (Oral and Injectable)
6. Report and publish patient medical data accumulated through the Electronic Patient Record.
7. To accumulate head count and medical data of Diabetic Patients under the medical care and service of BADAS Centres.
• Primarily the Electronic Registry will be implemented among BADAS institutions and AAs, further extended to Accredited Physicians. BADAS will also encourage the physicians of health professional’s network for registering their patients in National registry for Diabetics in future.
• A 3-year plan will be undertaken to gradually involve all BADAS Centres.
Activities:
• Manpower selection and training- completed

Nationwide Free Diabetes Screening
Aims:
• To investigate the rate of unknown diabetes and related risk markers among adult population in Bangladesh.
• To evaluate the level of knowledge about diabetes in Bangladeshi people.
• Collaboration: A joint collaboration of Diabetic Association of Bangladesh and Non-Communicable Disease Control Program, DG Health, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of People’s Republic of Bangladesh.
• Funding: NovoNordisk, Abbott International and Incepta Pharma Bangladesh.
• Project duration: 4 months (November 2018 – February 2019)
• Total screening: 100,000
• Study sites: Apart from 102 centers/hospitals of the BADAS and its Affiliate Associations around the country, this programme carried out in 800 spots of 400 thanas around the country.
• Key points:
• According to the preliminary findings, the rate of DM is 25.6%, and the rate of good knowledge about DM is only 38.8%.
Prevention of diabetes through religious leaders (Imams)
Activities (Phase I)
1. One hundred (100) religious leaders (Imam) received intensive training on healthy lifestyle for the prevention and care of diabetes and other NCDs.
2. One hundred (100) diabetes corners establish in 100 Mosques in Dhaka division near to BADAS outpatients’ clinics.
3. Developed education toolkits including booklets (15,000), leaflets (20,000), posters (6000), flip chart (150), training manuals (300), stand banners (110), round board banners (110).
4. Three (3) television and Three (3) radio talk shows arranged for improving community awareness.
5. Develop and mobile helpline for improving awareness and patient’s compliance.
6. One documentary film developed for community awareness.
7. One mobile network established between Imams and Project office of BADAS for information sharing and data collection.
8. Two hundred (200) Medical and Nursing Students from 3 Medical Colleges and 2 Nursing Colleges of BADAS will be participated in two (2) advocacy meeting during project periods.
9. Around fifty thousand (50,000) people will receive screening and education services from these corners.
10. More than five (5) million general people will receive information on healthy lifestyle for the prevention and care of diabetes and other NCDs through religious leaders (Imams).
11. One (1) dissemination program will be organized after completion of the project to present and discuss the results among the stakeholders in Bangladesh, policy makers and donor agency.
Phase II
• A total of 500 religious’ leaders (Imam) will receive intensive training on healthy lifestyle for the prevention and care of diabetes and other NCDs; and 500 diabetes corners will be established at least one corner in each Upazila of Bangladesh.
• After completion of training program, trained Imams role will be to advocate, promote and encourage on healthy lifestyle for the prevention and care of diabetes and other NCDs through religious sermon (Khutbah) usually during congregation prayer on Friday.
• Facilities including blood glucose testing by glucometer, blood pressure – and weight measurement and educational materials on healthy lifestyle will be available in each diabetes corner.
• The program launch a service package for the sustainability of the project. From every client, Imam will charge 40 BDT for capillary blood glucose tests, measurement of blood pressure and body weight. Along with this program, we will also do free diabetes screening of 2,00,000 people.
Pre-conception care through religious leaders (Marriage registrar/Kazis)
Activities
• Trained 400 Marriage Registers (Kazis).
• Trained 300 Health Professionals (Physicians, Nurses, and Diabetes Educators).
• Established 60 preconception care corners in 60 centers/ hospitals of BADAS
• A total of 30000 couples has already been provided counseling by the trained religious leaders. Develop an online certificate course. It is linked with IDF Education Library. Now anyone from any part of the world can take part in PCC online certificate program.
• South Asian Federation of Endocrine Societies (SAFES) has endorsed the education program on preconception care.
• Develop a consensus guideline for preconception care.
• One-page information of pre-conception care has now been included in the general guidebook of BADAS.
Landmark Achievement
• The National Council of BADAS has taken pre-conception care as one of the core programs of the Association.
• BADAS has launched a pre-conception counseling package at a minimum cost (600 Taka).
• Around 2000 women in reproductive age taken the preconception care package.
• Honorable President, Honorable Prime Minister, Honorable Minister of Health, and Family Welfare of Govt. of Bangladesh have endorsed the preconception care and planned pregnancy.
• WDF has published two cover stories about Preconception Care Project.
• BADAS has also launched a national campaign “Healthy Mother- Health Children- Healthy National: All Pregnancy Should be Planned.”
• Ministry of Law has passed a new law for Kazis for providing preconception care message to the newly married couple, and a seal must imprint the slogan (Healthy Mother- Healthy Child- Healthy Nation – All Pregnancy Should be Planned) of the program in the marriage contract (Kabin Nama).
• It will help to meet SDG goals 3, 5, 11.
• The success story of the PCC program discussed in the 3rd UN High-level Meeting on Non-communicable Diseases.
Screening for Gestational Diabetes Mellitus and its Prevalence in Bangladesh
A joint initiative of BADAS and Novo Nordisk Pharma (Pvt)
Objectives:
1. To evaluate the countrywide prevalence of GDM and its associated risk factors in Bangladesh.
2. To evaluate the knowledge about GDM among pregnant women in Bangladesh.
• Target population: Pregnant women who are living in the localities close to the selected centers
• Total study samples: 7000
• According to the preliminary findings, the rate of GDM is 26.4%, and the rate of good knowledge about GDM is only 26.3%.
BADAS Diabetes Care Guideline and Diabetes Journey
BADAS first diabetes care guideline and app-based treatment approach called Diabetes journey.
These initiatives will expand the specialist physicians base and will empower the physicians to enhance the treatment of diabetes ensuring quality care

Study Place: 39 Regional Training Centers of DLP in Dhaka (BIRDEM), Chittagong, Khulna, Rangpur, Rajshahi, Faridpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet.
Screening for diabetes and related cardiometabolic risks at workplaces in Bangladesh
This study is part of the Diabetes Prevention Program in Workplaces (DPWP), an ongoing diabetes prevention program of the Diabetic Association of Bangladesh (BADAS).
Main objective: to establish a model surveillance system with a special focus on diabetes and related cardiometabolic risk factors for industry workers in Bangladesh.
Ibrahim Healthline (Medical Call Centre)
Ibrahim Healthline, the call center facility of Diabetic Association of Bangladesh (BADAS), began with the objective to extend healthcare services through mobiles to people in every corner of Bangladesh. BADAS with its patient bank is in an ideal situation to best utilise the call center with over 100 facilities across Bangladesh to improve referral cases amongst its Hospitals and Medical Centers and improve service for the patients.
Tk. 150 per year and Tk. 365 per year packages provide the following services:

To deliver eye treatment services to the remote areas of the country
On January 21, 2020, Bangladesh Diabetic Association has signed an agreement with Innovation Place Bangladesh, an organization located at 39, Anwar Land Mark, Shyamoli, Dhaka-1207, for the purpose of providing eye care services to the remote areas of the country.
According to the contract, Innovation Place Bangladesh will arrange Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) Screening by appearing at BADAS choice or convenient place with a mobile van equipped with trained manpower and modern equipment.
Liaison and signing of MoU with Director of Non-communicable Diseases (NCD) Department regarding receipt and distribution of free insulin.
The government has decided to provide free insulin to type-1 diabetic patients. In this regard, a memorandum of understanding was signed with the Department of Non-Communicable Disease Control (NCD) Program of the Department of Health by personally communicating with Prof. Dr. Md. Robed Amin, line director, regarding the collection of government-provided insulin and some other medicines for diabetic diseases from the designated outlets of the government. .
As the MoU is signed, the patients enrolled in BADAS organanization NCDs’ will provide free of cost insulin or medicine as per the order form given by the concerned doctor in BADAS guide book but will have to pay for other medicines.
